Fresh Split-Complementary Palette

Hello lovely artists, and welcome to today’s colour celebration!

If you’ve ever felt the thrill (and the tiniest flutter of fear) at the sight of a new colour scheme, this post is for you.

Exploring colour is endless. Endlessly fascinating and enjoyable. It’s something that I don’t try to master - I’d rather befriend her and play in her world, discovering more and more of her mysterious and wondrous ways.

Do you like to start your art or creative projects with a colour palette in mind? I used to just dive in, but now I always begin with a palette. I flip through any one of my sketchbooks and land when my heart leaps.

When I’m making the palettes, I don’t have an agenda. I like to explore without the limitation or pressure of needing it to work for my next project. That way, I have a huge selection of palettes to choose from at any time.

I’ve just released a free PDF featuring -

A gorgeous plums‑in‑a‑bowl reference photo.

A hand‑picked split‑complementary palette.

A blank template so you can play, experiment, and make the palette truly your own.

In the video, I guide you through choosing a hero colour (deep violet), balancing it with gentle orange and green companions, and expanding your palette with subtle hue and saturation shifts.

In the second part of the video, I show you how to incorporate colours in a playful abstract colour study.

Whether you’re working in pastels, paint, or pencils, this mini‑workshop invites you to trust your instincts and embrace colour’s magic. I can’t wait to see the beautiful palettes you create—tag me on Instagram @bernadette.meyers.art so I can cheer you on!
